The Department of International Economics and Trade was established in 1988. It currently offers an undergraduate program in International Trade, three master’s programs (International Trade, World Economy, International Business), and two doctoral programs (World Economy, International Trade). Among them, International Trade is a Distinguished Undergraduate Program of the Ministry of Education, a Key Major of Jiangsu Province, and a Brand Major of Jiangsu Province; World Economy is a National Key Cultivated Discipline and a Key Discipline of Jiangsu Province. In addition, the Department houses the Nanjing University Free Trade Zone Comprehensive Research Institute and the Jiangsu Economic Internationalization Decision-Making Consultation Research Base.

The Department has 17 full-time faculty members, including 6 professors, 7 associate professors, and 4 assistant professors/lecturers. Among the faculty are 1 National Excellent Teacher, 1 participant in the Ministry of Education’s “New Century Excellent Talents Support Program”, 1 Young and Middle-Aged Academic Leader of Jiangsu Provincial “Blue and Green Project”, and 4 recipients of overseas doctoral degrees.

The undergraduate program of the Department is mainly committed to cultivating high-level practical talents who can engage in economic, trade, financial, and investment practices and management in various international enterprises, financial investment institutions, government departments, and public institutions, as well as research-oriented talents who can further their studies in renowned universities at home and abroad. The undergraduate program also has a university-level international cooperation project — a “2+2” transnational undergraduate dual-degree program jointly cultivated by the Department of International Economics and Trade of Nanjing University and the Department of Chinese Business and Commerce of Konkuk University in South Korea. The master’s and doctoral programs are mainly focused on cultivating high-level specialized talents who can engage in economic and trade, finance, and investment management in large international enterprises, government departments, and public institutions, as well as teaching and research work in universities and research institutions.
